The Art of Abhyanga:
Nourishing the body, mind & spirit with warm-oil massage
Abhyanga is the traditional, Indian practice of applying warm oil to the body to promote physical and mental well-being. According to Ayurveda, the holistic healing system of India,
“Massaging oil into the human organism imparts a tone and vigor to its tissues in the same manner as water furnishes the roots of a tree or a plant with the necessary nutritive elements, and fosters its growth.” Sushruta Samhita, Chikitsa Sthanam XXIV: 29-32.
Abyanga literally puts the “juice” back into the body and is a deep practice of self-care and love. In fact, the Sanskrit word for oil, “sneha” also means love and the effects of abhyanga can feel like being saturated with love itself.
Some of the benefits of practicing abhyanga include:
Nourishing the body both internally and externally
Decreasing the effects of aging and increasing longevity
Strengthening the immune system
Improving digestion
Imparting tone and vigor to the body’s tissues
Improving internal organ functioning
Soothing the mind & reducing stress
Reducing insomnia & promoting deep, restful sleep
